Registering your SMS Sender ID
CommandPost® is approved by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) as a participating and certified provider for the SMS Sender ID Register. This page explains what the Register is, how it affects the text messages you send, and how to register your Sender ID.
What the Register is
Part 24B of the Telecommunications Act 1997 provides for the establishment of the SMS Sender ID Register (the Register), which ACMA runs.
A Sender ID is the name a text message shows as its sender, such as your agency's name, in place of a phone number. The Register records which organisations may use which Sender IDs, so that scammers cannot impersonate them.
Unregistered Sender IDs are labelled 'Unverified'
From 1 July 2026, if a text message is sent with a Sender ID that is not registered in the Register, the message is labelled 'Unverified' on the recipient's phone.
What you need to send messages with a Sender ID
To send text messages with a Sender ID, your organisation must register the Sender ID in the Register and send the messages through one or more participating telecommunications providers. CommandPost® is a participating provider.
Who can register
These types of entity can be approved to apply to register a Sender ID:
- an individual
- a body corporate (such as a company)
- a corporation sole
- a body politic
- a government entity (within the meaning of the A New Tax System (Australian Business Number) Act 1999)
- a partnership
- any other unincorporated association or body of persons
- a trust
- a superannuation fund (within the meaning of the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993)
To have a Sender ID registered, your organisation must show it has a valid use case for it: the Sender ID must match your identity and be clearly linked to your organisation.
How to apply
You apply through a participating telecommunications provider that sends messages for its customers (an originating provider), such as CommandPost®. ACMA publishes a list of all of these providers: Approved telcos and message providers (ACMA)
If your organisation has an ABN
You can apply through any participating originating provider, or a partner of one. To be approved to apply:
- the person making the request must be listed as an authorised contact for your organisation on the Australian Business Register, or be otherwise authorised by your organisation;
- that person must pass an identification check; and
- that person must agree to the Register's terms of use.
Once the provider has lodged the application, the person who made the request receives instructions from ACMA on how to access the Register.
Once ACMA approves your organisation, your organisation can confirm the registration of the Sender ID.
An organisation with an ABN can also register its Sender ID through an originating provider that is a certified telecommunications provider, such as CommandPost®.
If your organisation does not have an ABN
An organisation without an ABN, such as a community group, a school or an overseas organisation, can only apply through a certified telecommunications provider or a partner of one. CommandPost® is a certified provider, and runs checks similar to those for organisations with an ABN.
An organisation without an ABN that registers this way cannot access the Register itself.
Using other providers
Once your Sender ID is registered, you can authorise other participating telecommunications providers to send messages with it. Your Sender ID is not tied to the provider that registered it.
Cost
CommandPost® does not charge a fee to register a Sender ID, and there is no ongoing annual charge.
ACMA does not currently charge fees to use the Register. It has said that any future fees will be announced before they apply.
Register your Sender ID with CommandPost®
Agency administrators can apply from Sender ID Registration in the CommandPost® Agency Console. We lodge the application with ACMA on your agency's behalf.
